What is the Feast of St. Thomas, Apostle?

The Feast of St. Thomas, Apostle is celebrated on July 3rd. On this holy day, we commemorate St. Thomas, the patron of architects and builders. He is known for his disbelief and doubts about the Apostles' claims that Jesus had risen from the dead. A week after, Jesus appeared to the Apostles and asked Thomas to place his hand in His side. When Thomas did, he exclaimed, "My Lord and My God!" This proved that Jesus indeed resurrected.

Pope Benedict XVI spoke of St. Thomas' doubts, explaining that we can from them and know that Jesus is in fact real. Thomas' interaction with the risen Lord comforts us in our insecurities and uncertainties.

Following Pentecost, St. Thomas preached the Good News to Persians and Medes, until he reached India, where he evangelized and was eventually martyred in 72 A.D.

St. Thomas

Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

- John 20:27-29
